Islam Makhachev — what he brings to Philadelphia

Makhachev arrives off the most complete win of his career: a 50-45 shutout of Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 on November 15, 2025, in his welterweight debut. That night he logged 19 minutes, 10 seconds of control time, took the belt in a second division, and tied Anderson Silva's UFC record of 16 straight wins.

Wrestling — the engine

He chains level changes off the cage, rides hips with brutal pressure and hunts the back without giving up position. As lightweight champion he set the divisional record with four title defenses and the highest significant-strike accuracy in division history (59.5%). Against Della Maddalena he negated the striking entirely by getting the fight to the floor at will.

The opponent question

The challenger is unsettled: Ian Machado Garry, Kamaru Usman, Michael Morales, or Carlos Prates are all in the mix. Makhachev has said he hasn't signed anything yet.

Early lean (no odds yet): Every likely opponent is primarily a striker — Makhachev's grappling is the great equalizer. A pure-boxing challenger likely walks in as the underdog; Usman is the only stylistic wrinkle that complicates the read. Full pick posts when the bout is announced.

UFC 330 undercard picks & previews

Lightweight
Edson Barboza vs Esteban Ribovics
Edson Barboza vs Esteban Ribovics

Philly return for Barboza. Ribovics lands 7.27 sig. strikes/min — volume vs experience.

Angle: Striker duel; lean Ribovics if it stays standing (odds TBD).

Middleweight
Vicente Luque vs Tresean Gore
Vicente Luque vs Tresean Gore

Luque's power vs Gore's guillotine chain — finish or grappling path.

Angle: Style clash; watch takedown defense vs chain wrestling (odds TBD).

Edson Barboza vs Esteban Ribovics — full breakdown

A guaranteed firefight, and a homecoming with history: Barboza was last in Philadelphia in 2019, when Justin Gaethje knocked him out at a Fight Night. At 40, the American Top Team veteran is still one of the most dangerous leg-kickers and wheel-kick artists in the division, with nine career knockouts — but he's lost three straight, most recently a first-round KO to Jalin Turner at UFC 323 in December 2025.

Ribovics lands 7.27 significant strikes per minute. His weakness is grappling — Mateusz Gamrot submitted him at UFC 327 in April 2026. Barboza is a striker, not a grappler, so this stays standing, and that favors the younger, higher-volume man.

Vicente Luque vs Tresean Gore — full breakdown

Luque is "The Silent Assassin" — eight knockouts and seven submissions among his 24 wins, now at 185. He ships 5.24 significant strikes a minute, and his chin has been tested in recent years.

Gore's three UFC wins all came by submission, most recently a third-round guillotine over Azamat Bekoev in April 2026. If Luque keeps it standing his power dominates; if Gore chains takedowns he has the path.
